Seeds from Macadamia integrifolia is an evergreen tropical or tender perennial in the Proteaceae family. Its native range is from southeast Queensland to northeast South Wales. Familiar names include Smoothshell Macadamia Nut Tree, bush nut, Queensland nut, and nut oak. It grows wild in the rainforests in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. It can grow to around 20 feet tall and wide with a grayish-brown trunk. The leaves are relatively large, around 6-8 inches long and 3-4 inches wide. They are smooth and glossy with wavy leaf margins. The tiny fragrant flowers are usually white but may be pink as well. The fruits follow the flowers months later, producing a woody nut around 1-1.5 inches in diameter. It prefers to grow in full sun with little water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Germinating Macadamia integrifolia seeds involves several crucial steps. To begin, carefully crack the hard outer shell of the seed using a vice or a pair of pliers to expose the inner kernel. It's essential to be gentle to avoid damaging the delicate kernel inside. After cracking, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 to 48 hours, changing the water every 12 hours. This soaking process helps soften the kernel and promote germination. Following soaking, plant the seeds in a well-draining potting mix or a seed-raising mix, ensuring they are planted with the cracked side facing down and covered with about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) of soil. Maintain consistent moisture in the soil, keeping it slightly damp but not waterlogged. Place the planting container in a warm, sheltered location with indirect sunlight. Germination typically occurs within 4 to 6 months, with the emergence of a small seedling. Once the seedling is strong enough, it can be transplanted into its final growing location, preferably in a subtropical or tropical region with well-drained soil. With patience and proper care, you can successfully grow Macadamia integrifolia trees from seeds, eventually enjoying their bountiful and delicious nut harvests.
