SECOND SEMESTER INTENDED FOR USE WITH THE AENEID STUDENT WORKBOOK. A 213-page document for anyone studying The Aeneid using Henle Fourth Year Latin. Tailored to the Classical Conversations Challenge IV Second Semester Grammar Strand in 15 weeks. These discussion questions walk through the companion book, “The Aeneid Student Workbook,” which includes a “good” English summary of The Aeneid storyline each week for reading aloud in class. (You must also purchase the “The Aeneid Student Workbook” in order to effectively use these discussion questions. I recommend printing and binding a copy of The Aeneid Student Workbook for each student to bring to class every week.) Read the English aloud in class together and then use discussion questions in the following lesson plans to guide your class conversation. This allows all students to participate in this strand regardless of their Latin level. Other highlights of these discussion questions include: • Exordium ideas and related questions to draw students in. These exordiums often allow for integration with other Challenge IV strands including Exposition, Poetry, History, and Theology as well as lots of Fine Arts. (Exordia and discussion handouts are also available for purchase in The Aeneid: Handouts document to enhance the discussion.) • Lots of discussion questions to choose from. These questions help students to both comprehend what is happening in the story AND appreciate how Virgil composes his poetry. They also help students to evaluate the Roman worldview and examine leadership, choices, and consequences to promote thought-provoking and fruitful conversations. Directors are given lots of options, so they can choose what is best to include depending on their class size, interest, and skill. • Focused Latin Assignments to highlight Virgil’s Latin poetry. We dip our toes in the original in order to appreciate the beauty. (These Latin assignments are also included in The Aeneid Student Workbook, so students have space to work through the assigned translation lines.) • No grammar lessons are covered in these plans, but a lot of Latin grammar will be discussed during the Focused Latin Assignment section. These Discussion Questions also include a complete parsing of every word in the Focused Latin Assignment for each week. • Notes on Roman history to understand the context for these accounts. These lesson plans pull rich information from Henle IV and other resources all in one place as you work through Virgil’s poem. Directors will need to also purchase the Aeneid Student Workbook in order to use these discussion questions. (See the Aeneid Student Workbook for more information.) Corresponding handouts are also available in another document to help students focus on the visuals and quotes used for discussion. (See The Aeneid: Handouts for more information.) This PDF file is for personal use only and may not be distributed. The purchaser has permission to print one copy of this file for personal use.
