This vintage Japanese doll set includes five figures and a full traditional display, made in Japan in the 1980s. The set features an emperor, an empress and three court ladies, representing a traditional Japanese spring festival that celebrates girls and wishes for their healthy growth and happiness. The dolls wear richly detailed silk costumes featuring traditional Nishijin-ori textile from Kyoto and gold-thread decoration. The emperor carries a sword at his waist. The empress wears layered Japanese court robes and holds a fan. The three court ladies represent attendants serving the imperial couple, and each holds a traditional utensil used for serving sake. Displayed together with the ceremonial accessories and tatami-covered platform, the five figures create a complete scene inspired by Japan’s historic imperial court.
