Up for sale is an original 1920s era John B. Stetson “The Boss Raw Edge” western hat in black fur felt. The sweatband is stamped with the Clear Nutria quality designation: JOHN B. STETSON CO. PHILADELPHIA, PA. THE BOSS RAW EDGE CLEAR NUTRIA This piece features an unlined crown as manufactured, showing the dense fur felt construction of the period. It retains its original thin ribbon band, high open / creased western crown, raw kettle-curled brim, vintage foil monogram initials (“J F B”) on the inner felt, and the hand-stitched red ribbon bow at the rear seam. Measurements • Brim Width: 3.25 inches • Crown Height (As Shaped): 5.0 inches • Crown Height (Open Crown): 5.5 inches • Interior Opening (Front to Back): 7.875 inches • Interior Opening (Side to Side): 6.75 inches • Inner Circumference: approximately 23.0 inches, fitting like a true 7 3/8 (Long Oval) Condition & Notes • Felt & Shape: Good antique condition. Deep black color with dense, pliable felt and solid structure. No major moth damage, holes, or soft spots — only light surface wear visible under close inspection. • Sweatband: Original leather sweatband is complete with clear gold-leaf imprints, but the leather is firm. Important: The perimeter stitching around the front half (roughly 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock, and around 12 o,clock) has failed with age, leaving the leather unattached along the front. It will need professional re-stitching by a hatter if intended for regular wear. • Rear Seam: Minor age-related separation at the rear leather seam joint beneath the intact red ribbon bow.
