1983 Franklin Porcelain Songbirds of The World Thimble Collection by Robin Hill - "American Goldfinch" This is a thimble from the "Songbirds of The World Collection" from Franklin Porcelain created by Robin Hill and crafted in fine bone china and hand-decorated with 24 karat gold. There were twenty-five thimbles in all for this particular collection. The American goldfinch belongs to a small group of short-tailed finches that includes other North American goldfinches and the smaller siskins. One of America's most beloved birds, the goldfinch is found from coast to coast and from Canada southward through most of the United States. To illustrate its widespread popularity, the state of Washington on the Pacific Ocean has claimed the goldfinch as its state bird, and so have New Jersey on the Atlantic Coast and Iowa in America's heartland. The goldfinch is one of the loveliest of wild birds. The adult male features a canary-yellow body accentuated by black wings, tail and cap-like crown. The adult male features a canary-yellow body accentuated by black wings, tail and cap-like crown. The adult female is drab by comparison, her overall color being a dull olive-yellow. The goldfinch is usually found in flocks except when nesting. The birds' rhythmic flight and per-chic-o-ree cry are first noticed in April, when they arrive in the North. In midsummer American goldfinches begin their breeding season. Mated pairs choose nesting sites high in the trees, constructing their nests from local plant fibers listed with a soft mattress of thistledown. The female alone incubates the four to six pale-blue eggs for 12 to 14 days, while her mate is in constant attendance. The fledglings leave the nest at the age of 15 or 16 days. A great gift idea for any bird lover or thimble collector. This will come in a box suitable for gift giving. Please see photos for details. Measurements: Approximately 1"
