SEWING PATTERN (a downloadable pdf file written in English) Zoë This stylized beret was inspired by a hat worn in the film "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", though not strictly a replica (I like my design better). I designed the hat in the style of the 1940's as a delightful asymmetrical mixture between a flat cap and a beret. The sewing pattern includes options for quilting the cap (as in the film) or leaving it unquilted. It can be made from a variety of fabrics and can work as a period hat or a jaunty contemporary cap. This PDF file is instantly downloadable and can be printed on 8.5"x11" letter sized paper (USA) or A4 paper (European). It contains cut-out pattern shapes for a full range of sizes, detailed illustrations of each step of the project, sewing tips, notions required, fabric recommendations, size measurement instructions, links to a printable measuring tape as well as translations of hat sewing terminology in several other language and coupons for your next Elsewhen purchase. The sewing and millinery techniques in this pattern will be useful for future sewing projects and your overall understanding of hat construction. SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate - You must be familiar with your sewing machine and properties of different fabrics. HAT SIZES: 19"-25" measuring around the head above the ear FABRIC AND NOTIONS: • ½ yard of outer hat fabric • Matching thread • ¼ yard lining fabric • ¼ yard single sided fusible fleece - optional for quilting • Fabric pencil • 1 covered button kit (aluminum Dritz) – optional trim • 2’ thin metal wire (the gauge in wired ribbon) – optional for wiring accent bow • ¼ yard light fusible interfacing - optional to stabilize stretchy or loose weave fabric • 8” of plastic brim wire – optional to keep the top edge of hat from crumpling RECOMMENDED FABRICS: This hat can be made with a variety of fabrics, such as lightweight fabrics like prewashed cotton or silk or medium weight fabrics like wool suiting, corduroy or velvet. Lining can be polyester lining for cotton. Fusible fleece works best as a thin batting for a quilted hat or if you are using a medium weight fabric, use fusible interfacing. For sewing convex curves to concave curves, look for “forgiving” fabric in which fibers cooperate well. COPYRIGHT NOTICE: This hat is an original design by Wendy Talené of Elsewhen Millinery. This pattern and all photographs and illustrations in this pattern were also produced by Elsewhen and are for the exclusive use of this shop.
