Each volume in the series has been photographically reproduced from the original edition. In the spring of 1851, nine members of the Oatman family set out for California with a group under the leadership of James C Brewster. Brewster believed that the Latter-day Saints in Utah had erred in their interpretation of the chosen land, and was headed to California on the old Santa Fe Trail. Seventy miles from California the party was attacked. The entire Oatman family was killed, with the exception of a boy mistakenly left for dead, and two girls, Ann and Olive. The girls were taken into captivity and sold to tribes further west. The author's narrative vividly describes the Oatman family, their fateful journey, the massacre, captivity, and the surviving brother's long search for his sisters. Olive Oatman's account of her captivity provided one of the earliest descriptions of life in Indian villages of the Southwest. Originally published in 1857, this Time-Life edition reprints in its entirety the text of the enlarged third edition. Includes the publisher's insert.SYNOPSIS: CAPTIVITY OF THE OATMAN GIRLS: BEING AN INTERESTING NARRATIVE OF LIFE AMONG THE APACHE AND MOHAVE INDIANS: CONTAINING ALSO AN INTERESTING ACCOUNT OF THE MASSACRE OF THE OATMAN FAMILY, BY THE APACHE INDIANS IN 1851; THE NARROW ESCAPE OF LORENZO D. OATMAN; THE CAPTURE OF OLIVE A. AND MARY A. OATMAN; THE DEATH BY STARVATION, OF THE LATTER; THE FIVE YEARS SUFFERING AND CAPTIVITY OF OLIVE A. OATMAN; ALSO HER SINGULAR RECAPTURE IN 1856; AS GIVEN BY LORENZO D. AND OLIVE A. OATMAN, THE ONLY SURVIVING MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY TO THE AUTHOR. In 1851, nine members of the Oatman family -- on their way by covered wagon to California -- were savagely attacked by Apache Indians near Fort Yuma, Arizona. Two girls in the family, Olive Ann, 14, and Mary Ann, 8, were taken captive by their attackers. An older brother, Lorenzo, 15, was left for dead but managed, though gravely wounded, to make his way back to civilization. The rest of the family had been brutally massacred. The story of the Oatman girls -- their despairing life in captivity, the tragic death of little Mary Ann from shock, poor food, and severe conditions a year after their capture, and their brother's five-year search for them -- is vividly described in this riveting true-life story.
