This Chinese Writing Stone cabochon from Auburn, California features bright feldspar crystals set in a deep black basalt matrix, creating the distinctive patterns that resemble characters from Chinese calligraphy. Chinese Writing Stone—also known as Chinese Writing Rock—is a porphyritic rock formed when light feldspar crystals crystallize within a dark volcanic basalt. The bold contrast between the bright crystal formations and the inky black background gives the stone its dramatic graphic appearance and makes it a favorite among lapidary collectors and jewelry designers.
